Frosted Petunias Artful Bag Challenge for the month of March was Embellish. I started with a plain little green bag. Cute, but not Special. The oriental pin has been laying in my bead re-do pile for years. I added more beads and made another hangey down bead thingey that attaches to the strap. It will probably drive me insane the first time I use it, but looks cool just for the sake of ART.

Writing about the things we Hate is a snap.

The grey areas of life are the one's that keep eluding us, leaving us sometimes empty and unsure of ourselves and our place in the world. Perhaps I should really tax myself and do a Grey Area Page. Maybe another day, my brain is entirely too befuddled right now.

This is a two-fer, fotocollage challenge and journal prompt too!! The image of the little girl came from http://fridayfotocollage.blogspot.com/ , the picture below was our challenge; I altered the image and made the journal page on the top. Our Journal prompt last month was "What do I Love:, you can see every one's pages at http://www.flickr.com/groups/1570781@N20/.

I used transparency film to make the three small Fleur de lis in the upper left of my Journal Page. Amy at "Butterscape" has been tantalizing us with transfers and other creative topics, so the transfer thing has been heavy on my mind. A few years back I did transfers, but have since lost (well... misplaced... its around here someplace) the film. On a thrift store trek yesterday, what did I stumble upon? 100 sheets of transparency sheets for a whole whopping $2.99. I was really pissed when they wouldn't give me my senior discount, alas old farts discount is on Tuesday. Let me get my math correct here, I paid 30cents a sheet! It might not be as good as Lazertan, but it's working for this old girl. Friday Foto Collage challenged us this week with "Umbrellas", all shapes and sizes. This was a fun challenge! My "little dancing umbrella girl" is a bit stuff, I think she needs to be set free, perhaps placed on a more artful background with some squiggles and such. Take a Word always have a fun challenge. I just couldn't make myself do a St. Patrick's Day theme. I'm not sure where green and pink go on the color friends chart, but I've always loved these two colors together. My bedroom in 7th grade was pink and green, my brother helped me decorate it and it was fab! Yes... 1963, oh, those were the days. Anyway, back to this little Green Peace (pun), I had lots of fun making the composition work. Not a piece of art by any means, but none the less, 'twas fun.

I must admit, the valentine, heart theme wasn't my favorite, but what the hey! I still had fun. Vending in Quartzsite is almost over, Ken and finished our share of tearing down the Big Purple building. Whew! Over Presidents Day weekend, we'll visit with our RV pals at "The Steps" and try to take in at least one night of the Huge Fireworks Show and of coarse, the big birthday bash on Saturday. Life is good!

What fun I've had cuttin' and pastin' and scribbling with pastel sticks. I was raised in the 60's so The Beatles were a big part of my life, dahhhhhhhhhhh the "Blackbird" theme really sang to me. The research lead me to the real meaning of the song... Paul McCartney wrote this about the civil rights struggle for blacks after reading about race riots in the US. He penned it in his kitchen in Scotland not long after Little Rock, when the federal courts forced the racial desegregation of the Arkansas capital's school system. McCartney told Mojo magazine October 2008: "We were totally immersed in the whole saga which was unfolding. So I got the idea of using a blackbird as a symbol for a black person. It wasn't necessarily a black 'bird', but it works that way, as much as then you called girls 'birds'; the Everlys had had Bird Dog, so the word 'bird' was around. 'Take these broken wings' was very much in my mind, but it wasn't exactly an ornithological ditty; it was purposely symbolic."

I'm on a creative binge! Yahoooo. Being a creative person while living and working on the road in an RV is perplexing, well okay, let's get real here, it's almost impossible. Somehow, I'm going to find the art spirit inside me again. As in the past, I found delight in the weekly challenges so that's where I'll start. I'm pushing paper around with The Word Challenge " BlackBird"... and having a ball. When I finally get past the huge pile of laundry that stands between me and my fun papers, I'll publish my take on "BlackBird". Hint, Hint... remember the lyrics to this Beatles song...

Not another Quilt Show?

Yes... there was another quilt show. This might be the best fabric art show I've ever been to. I found it advertised in a local "free" newsprint. The Asheville Quilt Guild is great group; the show was held at the NC arboretum; over 250 quilts (some clothing and what I'd refer to as ART), 5-6 vendors and a great time, indeed. There were a few that I found outstanding;

1) A Beetles quilt (I think it won an award); the uniqueness was in the quilting. Beetle songs lyrics machine quilted in the open blocks, then the creative use of beetles printed fabric.

2) A horse pieced quilt art by a gal from Kansas and her flowers as well.

3) Many quilts that incorporated bold and liberating fabrics; (These vivacious quilt makers and the art quilt artist we saw at the Folk Art Center on the Parkway) have given me a more open mind to the use of bold colors to express myself. And then a Guild Artist that had for sale the most heavenly christian art ( I actually bought a framed fabric postcard), scriptures printed on fabric and quilted in a free form style.

3) I've not forgotten my lust for purses, so I picked up a new purse pattern the "Tulip Purse" and as well some sweet French Fabric from the FrenchConnectionFabricStore located (somewhere in NC). I don't even like purses , I typically like a small swatch, like a pocket kind of a thing that hangs about the neck. Perhaps I should design a Maryanne type pocketbook? Kind of a small, hangey down contraption. Hum.. I'll sleep on that idea.

I just must have a new design wall when we get home. Hum.. de dum.. Ken might have to add on or renovate so I can have a bigger studio. My mind is racing with ideas, I can hardly sleep at night. What has North Carolina done to me? What ever it is, I think it a good thing, I feel full of refreshing ideas,bright, flamboyant and filled with the zest for life.

Fabric,More Fabric and Quilts of Valor... "is this the cutest grandson ever?"

Once you have that fabric, art sniffer thing going on in your head, it just can't be stopped. (or was it quilt fate? whatever...) As Ken and I are winding along these rich North Carolina hills, we see a Huge sign ..."Sapphire Quilt Show. this week end", and since I have such a nose for fabric (and good hubby too) we follow the sent of threads. Alas,we find the Sapphire, NC quilt show. Great stuff, some art quilts, but the highlight was the QOV (quilts of valor.www.qov.org), probably 20 of them made by Sapphire, NC Quilt folks. All made with a tender heart and lots of love for our wounded soldiers. My grandson, Matt (that's the two of us in the picture) just returned from his second tour (is Iraq considered a tourist destination, what's with the tour thing?), anyway he's back in the USA and thanks to the good lord, he won't be needing a QOV. To keep with the Quilter Tradition, I picked up a few cloth items and some lovely quilt photo art. Oh, I almost forgot to mention, we stopped at Deb's Cat Quilt Shop in Franklin, NC early that morning and just happen to find some cat fabric, just what I needed.

I guess I should say; "where have I been"? Time sure flies when you're having fun. I'll not go into detail on just how much fun I've been having, let's just start from here and get on with it.

Alright already, I haven't done anything that I'd call creative in over a year. I've been dabbling with fabric, making purses and finishing UFO's.

We're on vacation at the moment, in North Carolina. This is what I call fun! Stopped in a local farmers market; picked up peaches, green beans and an antique hand cranked sewing machine. What was I thinking?

Arch Challenge " Transition"

My goodness what a stretch, Transition was our theme this week over at the Gothic Arch Challenge. I just couldn't get a handle on it. Finally, I just let my scissors and paper stash talk to me. The figures were originally a vintage photo of two older gals standing on the ocean front. They desperately needed a make over, so ... Ta Da... Transition!! New hair, designer clothes and accessories. Funny how art just happens when you "get out of the way".

Gothic Arch Challenge "Dogs"

What a challenge for me. I love cats, not dogs! My inspiration was the "Lucky Dogs" bone that I found in a magazine, then I discovered a dog face in another magazine, and then it just started clicking along. I don't gamble, but I think four seven's is lucky when you're playing the slot machines, so... ta da... four - sevens.

I'm also working on the TGIF mingle ATC's "heart theme", 4x4 Friday "open theme" and Monday Challenge. Great fun, as well as pushing the creative envelope. Most of today was spent re-organizing my studio. New white plastic to cover my sewing cutting mats, re-organized my paints (tossing the old dried out tubes.. lots of 'em) and getting all my "cool stuff" in one box as well as putting other found objects in clear glass canning jars. I hope since they will be on display and easy to see, I will be inspired by them and not have to search for that neat STUFF. Food for thought. I enjoy the small art venue ( it's simple), but I long to return to larger pieces of work, more like 24x30 or bigger. I need to meditate on that.

Gothic Challenge " Lyrics"

This weeks "Gothic Arch Challenge" is Music Lyrics. Since I don't follow directions very well, my first arch was a sweet girl playing the drums, no lyrics. Cute, but no words. So here I set in our RV in the wide open desert in Quartzsite (ever heard of it?), with a minimal amount of "art stuff" trying to complete the challenge. My first music choice was, I am I said by Neil Diamond, but I couldn't find the letters, so... I kept searching and since I refused to cut up my Somerset Studio or ClothPaperStudio, I resorted to cutting up quilting magazines. Look what I found; " Makes it Easy".. modified to read... "Take It Easy", by the Eagles. Runnin' down the road tryin' to loosen' my load, such a fine sight to see, Oh my Lord, it's a flat bed ford slowin' down to take a look at me... Take it easy.....

This is my first arch challenge, what a nice shape to work with! The theme is Gypsies. When I think Gypsy, I think crystal balls, story telling, singing, dancing and tarot reading. This is my queen of Swords from a tarot deck. The back ground is made of napkins. Next time I'll use a stronger backer board so I can douse it in acrylic medium or wax. 4 X 4 Friday Janurary 11

This is my first 4x4 Friday. This weeks challenge was Music. This little piece is entitled, "I don't wanna go." There are so many times in my life when.. I didn't wanna go either. In fact leaving Indiana this fall, was an "I don't wanna go". But life takes it turns and sometimes takes us to a one way street, or a dead end, and then of coarse there's the yellow brick road. Odd how we just exist and allow others to take us hither and yon.

The background is made of altered magazine papers, photo-copied sheet music, negative magazine punch-outs and a photo-copied clown. I also touched up with pink prisma pencils.

I love this one... It was an absolute blast to put together. Ya know how sometimes ART just happens? Well, this is it! Though I didn't see the movie, it feels like "The 3:10 to Yuma". I've been to Yuma a trillion times, but never on the 3:10! I have a dear sweet friend that loves Western movies, I'm thinking it would love this piece. I folded, punched, sewed and glued this little puppy together. Ah... life is good!!

I love how this one went together. Using the sewing machine on paper can be quite an addition to a collage. I'm glad I used it in the challenge, it will give me more confidence in future pieces.

Day three in the studio. As you can see, my studio is neat and tidy and I am able to locate things in an instant. Typically I clean up every day or so, but with this 7 day challenge, decided against it. The travel guide I chose leaves must to be desired, next time I'll be more particular in my selection.

I love reading about art and the creative process that we go though. The Artist's Way by Julia Cameron is filled with pathways to discovering the artist inside us all. This particular piece developed after reading about the Crazymakers in our lives. I quote from the book: Crazymakers are those personalities that create storm centers. They are often charismatic, frequently charming, highly inventive and powerfully persuasive. And, for the creative person in their vicinity, they are enormously destructive. You know the type; charismatic but out of control, long on problems and short on solutions.

"The Writing on the Wall" Daniel 5

Daniel... what a guy! No wonder God used him as a visionary.

Since January a lovely group of ladies and I from North Ridge Church have studied Daniel's life and prophesy. Guided all the while by Beth Moore. What a trip! Of all the heart moving scripture we've studied, I have selected "The Writing on the Wall", Daniel 5 for this month's journal quilt. October 12, 539 BC, what an awesome night, the party of all parties that brought the Babylonia empire to it's knees. Belshazzar made the huge mistake of treating the holy as unholy. He called for the silver and gold goblets, taken from the temple in Jerusalem many years prior to be used in a toast to his gods. Not a smart move, King Belshazzar.

....Suddenly the fingers of a human hand appeared and wrote on the plaster of the wall near the lampstand in the royal palace. The king watched the hand as it wrote. His face turned pale and he was so frightened that his knees knocked together and his legs gave way.
Daniel 5:5-6

....This is what these words mean;
Mene...God has numbered the days of your reign and brought it to an end.
Tekel...You have been weighed on the scales and found wanting.
Pers.....Your kingdom is divided and given to the Medes and Persians.

Beth brought to light an interesting twist on the ancient holy vessels. Like so, we too are holy vessels in a relationship with God and having a sacred purpose; marked as holy by him. Dare we treat ourselves ..."the holy as unholy"? Um.... another thought to ponder.

The quilt page uses fabric collage and raw edged applique, beading, fabric letter stencils and photo art printed on fabric. Words of scripture are printed on paper and rolled into a schroll and tied to the palm of the "hand".

Since early January I have been part of the Ruby Tuesday Women's group at North Ridge Community Church. We have begun a study of the book of Daniel; a Beth Moore Study. My journal page for March will most likely come from this study. Beth is enlightening, thought provoking and God inspired. February Journal Quilt "Proverbs 3:13 Wisdom

February's quilt page went together like a snap. Randy at North Ridge Church http://www.northridge.org/ read from Proverbs in his "2007 Bring it On" sermon; preparing for unforeseen tragedy, we must trust and know the truth in God's plan. I really liked Proverbs, so the next week I read more. Imagine finding answers to the problems we face in 2007 deep within the books written so many years ago. Wisdom is God's gift to us, he gives it only to those who earnestly seek it. This month, I will be the SEEKER.

Proverbs 3:13-16
Blessed is the man who finds wisdom,
the man who gains understanding.
for she is more profitable than silver
and yields better returns than gold.
She is more precious than rubies;
nothing you desire can compare with her.
Long life is in her right hand;
in her left hand are riches and honor.

The quilt page is made of batik and hand dyed fabrics and embellished with paper letters attached with beads, metal tags that spell out HONOR on her left hand and fish,frog and shell embellishment's in her right hand. A very satisfying project.

January "Fishers of Men" Journal Quilt

So, I'm a blogger now. Who would have thought? January flew by; great times with friends,family and RVing in Arizona. My theme for this years Journal Quilt is "12 Months of Scripture". January's quilt developed from the book of Matthew; "Come follow me," Jesus said, "and I will make you fishers of men." Matthew 4:19. Fishers of men, interesting how this scripture keeps popping up in my life. This summer, Steve, our pastor at Driftwood http://www.driftwoodcc.org/used this scripture in one of his sermons. As I kid, I always liked the story, but now as an adult I actually get it. Thanks Steve! I ask myself, am "I" able to use the right bait, my unique personality and as well, find common ground and be a fisher of men?

The quilt page is a collage of overdyed fabrics, paper and printed fish fabric. The scripture is printed on fabric, adhered to freezer paper and fed through my printer. A great project, I thoroughly enjoyed this months project.
